Quick answer

How do I remove a password from a PDF?

Open the PDF in Mergevanta's Unlock PDF tool, type its password and press Unlock PDF. You get a copy that opens without a password and has no limits on printing, copying or editing. Files that only restrict printing or copying need no password at all. The tool can't crack unknown passwords.

FAQ

Unlock PDF questions

Not if the PDF needs a password to open: you have to know it, and Mergevanta doesn't try to crack passwords. PDFs that open freely but block printing, copying or editing can be unlocked without any password.

No. The password is only used to open the file in your browser tab. In the rare case the file goes to the server, the password travels with it encrypted and is discarded when the request ends.

In your browser. Only if your browser can't read a file's encryption are files up to 4 MB sent to Mergevanta's server, encrypted end to end, unlocked in memory and never stored.

Unlock only files you own or have permission to change, such as your own documents or statements you received with their password. Removing protection from someone else's file without permission may break the law or an agreement.

Standard PDF password protection: 40-bit and 128-bit RC4, 128-bit AES and 256-bit AES. Encryption tied to a digital certificate can't be removed without that certificate.

Use Protect PDF to set a new password and choose what people can do with the file.
