Quick answer

How do I convert a PDF to Markdown?

Open Mergevanta's PDF to Markdown tool and add your PDF. It reads the text in your browser and turns headings, lists, tables, links and code into Markdown you can preview, copy or download as a .md file. The file is never uploaded, and scanned pages need OCR first.

What you get

Why use Mergevanta to convert a PDF to Markdown

Structure, not just text

Headings keep their levels, bullets and numbered lists stay lists (nested ones too), and text in aligned columns becomes a Markdown table.

Never leaves your device

Your browser reads the PDF. Nothing is uploaded, so it suits contracts, reports and other confidential documents.

Live preview

Check the result rendered or as raw Markdown. Changing an option updates the preview and the download instantly.

Clean, paste-ready output

Running headers, footers and page numbers are dropped, hyphenated words are rejoined, and paragraphs that run over a page stay whole.

FAQ

PDF to Markdown questions

No. PDF to Markdown runs entirely in your browser: the PDF is read on your device and the Markdown is built there too. Nothing is sent anywhere, so it works offline once the page has loaded.

Headings (with their levels), paragraphs, bulleted and numbered lists including nested ones, tables, links, code set in a monospaced font, and bold and italic text. Images and the exact page layout aren't part of Markdown, so they're left out.

A scan is a picture of text with no text layer, so there's nothing to convert. Run it through OCR PDF first to add a text layer, then convert the new file here.

Tables come from the PDF's own tags when it has them (Word and most browsers add tags), or from text that lines up in columns. The detection is deliberately cautious; if a table still looks wrong, turn off Turn columns into tables to get plain text instead.

Yes. Enter the PDF's password when asked. It is only used in your browser tab to open the file.

There's no limit beyond your device's memory, because nothing is uploaded. Long PDFs take a little longer to read, and the preview shows the beginning while Copy and Download include everything.

Yes. The converter works in mobile browsers on iPhone and Android; copy the Markdown or download the .md file straight from the result.
