## Frequently asked questions

### Does cropping delete what's outside the box?

No. Cropping changes which part of the page is shown and printed, so everything outside the box is hidden but still in the file — someone with a PDF editor could bring it back. To remove text or images for good, use [Redact PDF](https://www.mergevanta.com/redact-pdf).

### What does Mergevanta change in the PDF?

It sets each page's CropBox — the visible area — to your box. When the box lies inside the page, it also sets the MediaBox, the page's full size, to the same area, so apps that ignore the CropBox show the cropped page too. Text, images and fonts are not changed.

### How does auto-trim decide what to cut?

It renders each page at low resolution, finds the outermost marks that aren't white and keeps the border you choose around them. Same for all pages uses one crop that fits every page's content; Each page separately trims each page to its own content, so sizes can differ. Blank pages are left alone.

### Will the crop be right on rotated or landscape pages?

Yes. Margins are measured from the edges as the page is shown, so “top” is always the top you see — even on pages saved sideways or with page boxes that don't start at zero.

### Is my PDF uploaded?

No. Crop PDF runs entirely in your browser, including on phones, so the file never leaves your device. There's no size limit beyond your device's memory.

### Can I crop a password-protected PDF?
